Donni Davy first discovered the world of beauty, rather fittingly, through a sparkly, pink, plastic Caboodles case filled with shimmering lip glosses. “This was  the era of the Spice Girls and Claire's. I was delighted with anything makeup-related, cutesy, pink, and fun,” she said.But her Caboodles full of glosses didn’t directly lead Davy into her illustrious career as the founder of color cosmetics line Half Magic Beauty and makeup artist for the aesthetics-defining TV show Euphoria. Instead, her journey began studying photography and art history at Pratt Institute in New York—two mediums that proved useful for her subsequent career.Growing up painting, drawing, and taking photographs, Davy wasn't focused on beauty, but rather capturing a vibe or telling a story through an image, Davy told BeautyMatter.That began with special effects makeup. “There are practical elements of my art background that make me a stronger artist. But then there are the more conceptual thoughts I have about makeup and how I'm interested in using it, that makes me a different type of makeup artist,” she added.The makeup artist did a two-week crash course with film industry veteran makeup artist Jane Galli, best known for her work in Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3 and Jurassic World: Dominion before jumping into student sets and short films to sharpen her skills. “I didn't go to a makeup school so I didn't have other peers,” she said. After using makeup ads on Craigslist to get her first jobs, Davy was asked to do makeup for movies Under the Silver Lake and Academy Award-winning Moonlight, both produced by A24 Films.
