Ami Colé

Ami Colé, the premium color range stocked exclusively at Sephora and backed by L’Oréal's venture arm, will shut down.WHO: Launched in 2021, Ami Colé Beauty was founded by Glossier and L’Oréal alum Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye, is inspired by Senegal, and made in Harlem. The clean-beauty makeup brand is created to celebrate melanin-rich skin. The brand launched with three hero products, including a Skin-Enhancing Tint, Lip Treatment Oil, and Light-Catching Highlighter developed with input by 400 women. The brand has expanded to a suite of products to include eye and complexion. The brand is sold in the US and Canada at Sephora.WHY: The brand could not sustain in the current market. Scaling in a prestige national retailer demands working capital, merchandising spend, and sustained investor belief. It appears the brand ran out of runway to support its Sephora distribution. IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Founder N'Diaye-Mbaye (@diarrhaxo) said on Instagram, "After nearly four years in business, @byamicole will close this September. This decision was so hard for me. But after looking at every option, it became clear that continuing in this current market wasn’t sustainable.”She shared with The Cut, "This decision was so hard for me—the business bears my mother’s name and, as I built it, my daughter’s name, too. But after looking at every option, it became clear that continuing in this current market wasn’t sustainable.
